How citations work on
Expertini Research

How to export citations, import them into reference managers, correctly attribute preprints in academic work, and understand how the platform's citation metadata infrastructure works.

Exporting Citations

How do I export a citation from a paper page?

Every paper on Expertini Research has a "📋 Cite" button on the paper page. Clicking it opens the Citation Exporter for that specific paper. Select your format and click Copy or Download.

You can also use the standalone Citation Exporter tool by entering any paper slug or DOI-style ID. No login required for either method.

What citation formats are available?

We support four formats:

  • BibTeX — for LaTeX/BibTeX documents. The most common format for scientific papers in physics, maths, CS, and engineering.
  • APA 7th Edition — for psychology, social sciences, education, and many interdisciplinary journals.
  • RIS — a universal format importable into Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote, RefWorks, and most other reference managers.
  • MLA 9th Edition — for humanities, literature, and language studies.

The exported citation includes all available metadata: title, author(s), year, repository name (Expertini Research), DOI (if assigned), and the paper URL.

How do I correctly cite a preprint from Expertini Research?

The key rule: clearly identify it as a preprint. Here are example citations in the main formats:

APA:

Author, A. B., & Author, C. D. (2024). Title of the paper. Expertini Research [Preprint]. https://doi.org/10.XXXXX/expertini.XXXXXX

MLA:

Author, A. B. "Title of the Paper." Expertini Research, 2024, doi:10.XXXXX/expertini.XXXXXX. Preprint.

Chicago:

Author, A. B. "Title of the Paper." Preprint, Expertini Research, 2024. https://doi.org/10.XXXXX/...

Always check whether a peer-reviewed version has been published before finalising your citation. If it has, cite the published version.

How do I import a citation into Zotero?

Two methods:

Method 1 — RIS import (most reliable): Export the citation in RIS format from the Citation Exporter. In Zotero: File → Import → select your downloaded .ris file → click "Import".

Method 2 — Browser extension (easiest): Install the Zotero Connector browser extension. When you visit a paper page on Expertini Research, the Zotero icon in your browser toolbar will detect the citation meta tags and offer to save the paper directly to your Zotero library.

How do I import a citation into Mendeley?

Export the citation in RIS format from the Citation Exporter. Then:

  • In Mendeley Desktop: File → Import → RIS — Mendeley or Zotero → select your .ris file
  • In Mendeley Reference Manager (web): Click "Add" → Import library → choose RIS format → upload your file
How do I import a citation into EndNote?

Export the citation in RIS format from the Citation Exporter. In EndNote: File → Import → File → select your .ris file → set "Import Option" to RefMan RIS → click Import.

If the default RefMan RIS filter does not produce clean results, try the "Reference Manager (RIS)" filter instead.

Citation Metadata

What are citation meta tags and why do they matter?

Citation meta tags are HTML <meta> elements placed in the <head> section of a paper page. Google Scholar reads these tags to discover and index academic content. Without them, papers are not indexed as academic literature — they appear in regular web search results at best.

The standard tags include: citation_title, citation_author, citation_publication_date, citation_journal_title, citation_researcher, citation_abstract_html_url, citation_pdf_url, citation_keywords, citation_language, and citation_doi.

Every paper on Expertini Research has all applicable tags set automatically at publication. Use our Scholar Meta Preview tool to inspect the exact tags on any paper.

Does having a DOI improve how my paper is cited?

Yes, significantly. A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) provides:

  • Persistence: The DOI resolves to your paper even if the URL changes — important for citations that need to remain valid years later.
  • Cross-database indexing: Papers with DOIs are automatically indexed by Crossref, Dimensions, OpenAlex, and other scholarly databases — not just Google Scholar.
  • Citation tracking: Crossref tracks how many times your DOI has been cited across the academic literature.
  • Credibility: Some journals require that preprints cited in submitted manuscripts have a DOI.

A DOI costs $15–$25 as a one-time fee on Expertini Research. See pricing.

How do I track how many times my paper has been cited?

Several options:

  • Expertini Research dashboard: Your Paper Statistics page shows citations within our platform.
  • Google Scholar: Search for your paper title. The "Cited by" count shows how many Google Scholar-indexed papers have cited yours.
  • Crossref (if you have a DOI): Visit api.crossref.org/works/YOUR_DOI to see citation data from Crossref.
  • Dimensions / OpenAlex: These free scholarly databases track citations across millions of papers and are particularly good for preprints.
